Graduate with little or no debt
Students who earn a Criminal Justice degree at a CUNY Community College can make a seamless transition to the CJBS online program via the CUNY Justice Academy. Learn more about the CUNY Justice Academy here.
Students who are studying Criminal Justice and related fields at colleges outside of CUNY, or who have been out of college for some time, can start the transfer process to John Jay College here.
John Jay will evaluate credits in Criminal Justice and related fields from any accredited institution.
To be eligible for admissions, you should:
- Have earned an associate degree, be completing your degree this semester, or have earned 55-60 credits in a Criminal Justice or related associate degree program.
- Have a minimum 2.0 GPA in your prior college coursework
- Have completed coursework in English Composition and Mathematics to fulfill General Education requirements, or satisfied those requirements in another way.
You will be able to meet with an academic advisor each semester to plan your schedule and register for courses. The courses you will take are determined by the credits you have already earned and what your interests are.
Students in the CJBS online degree program can also earn a minor in Anthropology, Criminology, Law, or Police Studies.

By studying criminal justice at John Jay, you will learn from experts in the field with experience in a variety of legal, law enforcement and public safety roles. Coursework is designed for you to:
- Understand the historical development, functions and roles of each component of the criminal justice system.
- Describe and critically examine the major criminological theories on crime causation and prevention and apply them to criminal justice practice.
- Critically analyze the social response to crime and the practice of criminal justice.
- Demonstrate the ability to access, conduct, interpret, and apply criminal justice research.

You will complete all your courses using Brightspace, CUNY’s online learning management system.
