Bio
Penny Geyer, Ph.D., is a Doctoral Lecturer in the Department of Law, Police Science, and Criminal Justice Administration at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY. She earned her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from the University of New Haven, where her dissertation examined the panoptic deterrent effect of SkyWatch surveillance towers. She also holds master's degrees in Forensic Science (Investigative Services) and Computer Forensic Investigation from the University of New Haven.
Before joining John Jay, Dr. Geyer spent more than a decade as a medicolegal death investigator with the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. She is a Fellow of the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (Retired) and has extensive professional experience in forensic science, death investigation, and criminal investigations. She previously served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Hartford and has taught forensic science at Connecticut State Community College. She continues to present to universities, law enforcement agencies, emergency medical services organizations, and other professional groups on topics related to death investigation, forensic science, and criminal justice.
At John Jay, Dr. Geyer teaches undergraduate courses in research methods, criminological theory, writing in criminal justice, and capstone research. Her work focuses on creating engaging, evidence-based learning experiences that emphasize critical thinking, writing, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in higher education. She is actively involved in curriculum assessment, faculty development, and initiatives supporting student success, writing across the curriculum, and AI pedagogy.
Dr. Geyer's scholarly interests include policing and criminal investigations, forensic science, medicolegal death investigation, criminological theory, criminal justice education, and the integration of artificial intelligence into teaching and learning. She has been invited to provide expert commentary on criminal investigations and forensic science for national television and print media, including the History Channel's History's Greatest Mysteries with Laurence Fishburne.
