LSAT Prep Course

The Pre-Law Institute offers a summer LSAT prep course. This course is taught by Professor Carolyn Nelson, founder of Nelson Test Prep. Students selected for the LSAT Prep Course will participate in a summer-long, LSAT-focused learning community.

Using a variety of practice materials, including actual LSAT exams, this course will teach the logic, reasoning, critical reading, and writing skills tested on the examination. The course is free but participants must pay for LSAT Prep Plus for $99 or obtain a fee waiver for it through LSAC (http://www.lsac.org).

Eligibility

1. This course is open to students and alumni from the classes of 2023, 2024 and 2025. Applications are limited to students and alumni who graduated (or will graduate) from John Jay with a bachelor's degree. We are unable to accept applications from graduate students (except for those graduate students who've graduated from John Jay in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree).

2. Preference will be given to students who have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.3 or higher. In making admissions decisions, we will take into account the extent of your involvement in PLI programs and pre-law advisement, as well as the quality and persuasiveness of your personal statement and additional essay.

3. In order to participate in this program, you will need access to the Internet and technology that will allow you to take practice LSAT exams online.

4. In order to participate in this program, you commit to taking the LSAT in fall 2024. It is our expectation that all participants in this program will be applying to law school in fall 2024 to start in fall 2025.

Application Process

To be considered for this program you must:

  1. Complete the online application.
  2. Upload the required documents:
    1. A current resume
    2. You are required to submit a two-page, double-spaced personal statement. This statement should include what you consider to have been your significant personal experiences that have contributed to your decision to attend law school beyond what is reflected in your transcripts or resume. You should also discuss your academic and professional goals in the statement.
    3. You must also submit a one-page, double-spaced essay. The successful completion of this course will require a great degree of commitment, engagement and discipline. Please describe how you plan to prioritize this course amongst your competing responsibilities and personal obligations over the summer.
  3. Agree that you will:
    1. Attend and actively participate in ALL sessions of the LSAT preparatory course. Before applying, please ensure that you have reviewed the course schedule carefully. Because attendance at all sessions is required, no absences are permitted. If you have obligations that would prevent you from attending every class, please consider applying for this program in the future and not for this summer.
    2. Plan to apply to law school during the fall (2024) semester for admission to the class entering fall (of 2025).
    3. Commit to a minimum of 20 hours a week of out of class LSAT study.
