Bio

Barbara Cassidy’s plays have been seen at The Flea Theater, Margo Jones Theatre, JACK, Dixon Place. Little Theater and Bric Studios. Her play INTERIM was nominated for the Barrie Stavis Award by Playwrights’ Horizons and is published in the anthology New Downtown Now. Cassidy was a 2015 MacDowell Fellow and a 2010-2011 Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace Resident. She received a 2018 SuCasa Grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council, was a resident at HB Studio (2016) with Amie Hartman and Sarah Buff for their play DIORAMA. Cassidy is co-creator and director of SEEING RAPE- a theater and justice program at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.She was a semi-finalist for the Beatrice Terry Residency (2018), is a New Georges Affiliated Artist, and is a proud member of the Dramatists’ Guild. She earned her MFA in Playwriting from Brooklyn College where she studied with Mac Wellman. Her current writing project is I AM NOT A TERRORIST, an Irish American story. She teaches in ISP and Anthropology.

Research Summary

Barbara Cassidy is a playwright who is interested in gender, violence, justice, and philosophy. Her program with Shonna Trinch, SEEING RAPE, is a theater and justice program that comes out of a class by the same name, in which students study sexual violence through various disciplines, and write original plays as final projects. Select plays are put on the following semester in The Gerald Lynch Theater with professional actors.
