Mental Health & Counseling Support

The John Jay College Counseling Center provides free, confidential mental health and counseling services to support the emotional well-being, personal growth, and academic success of all John Jay students.

Ongoing Counseling

Students interested in ongoing counseling (meeting regularly with the same counselor throughout the semester) should email intake@jjay.cuny.edu to schedule an initial evaluation.

One-Time Appointments & Immediate Support

If you would like to schedule a one-time consultation or need to speak with a counselor immediately due to an urgent concern or crisis, please contact:

After-Hours Crisis Resources

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis outside of Counseling Center business hours, the following resources are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week:

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988
  • NYC 988: Call or text 988, or chat online for mental health support and crisis intervention.
  • NYC Samaritans: 212-673-3000

If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department immediately.

CUNY Talkspace

CUNY students have free access to Talkspace, an online therapy platform that connects students with licensed mental health professionals.

Togetherall

Togetherall is a free, safe, and anonymous online peer support community where students can connect with others, access self-guided mental health resources, and receive support in a moderated environment.

Name & Gender Marker Changes

John Jay College supports students who wish to update their legal or preferred name. Depending on your needs, the process differs slightly. The information below outlines each option and the steps to complete your request.

Preferred Name Change

A preferred name is the name you would like faculty, staff, and classmates to use in everyday interactions. It is not a legal name and does not change your official academic records, transcripts, or diploma. Preferred names may appear on class rosters, student email addresses, ID cards, Blackboard, and other non-official college records. 

How to Update Your Preferred Name

  1. Log in to CUNYfirst and update your preferred name in your Student Center.
  2. Email Jay Express at JayExpress@jjay.cuny.edu to request a referral.
  3. Use the referral to schedule appointments with:
    • DoIT to update your email display name and learning platforms.
    • Public Safety to update your John Jay ID card.
  4. Inform your professors that you have updated your preferred name, as class rosters may take time to refresh

Legal Name Change

A legal name change updates your official college records, including your transcript and diploma. To complete this process, you must provide legal documentation supporting your name change. 

How to Request a Legal Name Change

To update your legal name in your student records:

  1. Gather supporting legal documentation, such as a marriage certificate, court order, or divorce decree.
  2. Submit your request and supporting documentation to Jay Express.
  3. Once your request has been processed, Jay Express will direct you to the appropriate offices to update your:
    1. John Jay email display name and learning platforms (DoIT)
    2. Student ID card (Public Safety)
