Workshop Description:
This workshop provides practical guidance for students considering Ph.D. programs in criminal justice, criminology, and related fields. Participants will learn how to identify programs that align with their research interests and career goals, evaluate potential faculty mentors, and develop a competitive application. The workshop will provide specific guidance on writing a strong statement of purpose, presenting research interests and experiences, requesting letters of recommendation, and strengthening the overall application package. We will also discuss what to expect during interviews and recruitment visits, how to evaluate funding and mentorship opportunities, and how to navigate admissions decisions and competing offers. The goal is to demystify the Ph.D. application process and help students make informed decisions about whether, where, and when to pursue doctoral study.

About our Speaker: Lindsay Lerner
Ms. Lerner is a doctoral candidate in the Criminal Justice program at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the CUNY Graduate Center. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware and holds M.A. degrees in International Crime and Justice and Criminal Justice from John Jay College. Her research focuses on juvenile delinquency, school violence prevention, mass violence, and international criminal justice.

Lindsay has experience conducting quantitative and open-source research and has taught a range of criminal justice courses at John Jay. As an alumna of John Jay’s M.A. in International Crime and Justice program, she is especially excited to support current ICJ students through workshops, office hours, and individualized research mentorship. Lindsay expects to earn her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice in June 2027.
