Brian Kohlhepp is a native of the Pittsburgh area where he still lives. He is currently the Deputy Chief of Police. Here he oversees all the activities of the police department. He continues to supervise the Detective Division as well as the Forensic Investigation Unit. He spent the majority of his career in investigation as a Detective and eventually Detective Sergeant. He is also a department Public Information Officer handling all media events for major incidents and investigations. Deputy Chief Kohlhepp has conducted forensic investigations and has processed crime scenes ranging from homicide and sexual assault to burglary and theft. He has testified as an expert in Forensic Crime Scene Reconstruction. In addition to forensics, his area of investigative expertise was in investigating suspicious deaths, sexual assaults, and child abuse. Additionally, he is a member of the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task force. He has over numerous hours of specialized training in various policing subjects and is a certified polygraph examiner. He has a BA from Waynesburg University in Criminal Justice and a master’s from Pennsylvania Western University at California (Summa cum Laude) and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
In addition, he is a certified instructor in policing through the FBI and MPOETC. Deputy Chief Kohlhepp is Assistant Professor for graduate courses at Pennsylvania Western University, Legal Studies. He also serves as program director and instructor of numerous criminal investigation and forensic continuing education classes for attorneys and law enforcement at the Center for Law and Public Policy at PennWest California. He is on faculty teaching undergraduate and graduate classes for John Jay College of Criminal Justice and has conducted various continuing education seminars on campus in New York City. Deputy Chief Kohlhepp also serves on the faculty, teaching at Duquesne University in the Forensic Science and Law program, and Waynesburg University’s Master’s in Criminal Investigations program. In addition, he has given numerous lectures on these topics to agencies including: the Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner, Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, Beaver County District Attorney’s Office, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Pennsylvania State Coroner’s Convention, International Association of Forensic Nurses Conference and many more. Deputy Chief Kohlhepp is also a board member at UPMC Forensic Advisory Council, sits on the board of directors for Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR), and served on the Racial Equity Working Group for the Fifth Judicial District of PA
Kohlheppwas the lead investigator in a multi-jurisdictional investigation of a violent serial rapist that gained national media attention and led to an arrest and successful prosecution. In addition, he has worked several cases with the FBI and was detailed to Pittsburgh Police Homicide for a the murder of an armored truck employee and a robbery of 2.3 million dollars. This included a national manhunt that gained significant media attention and featured on America’s Most Wanted. This case resulted in an arrest in Florida and a first-degree murder conviction. Deputy Chief Kohlhepp has received numerous letters, awards, and commendations from his department, the FBI, other police agencies that he has assisted in various capacities, victim’s rights groups, the District Attorney’s office, and professional police organizations.
