Bio
Levi Vonk is a medical anthropologist and journalist. His first book, Border Hacker, was a finalist for the Chautauqua Prize and the Victor Turner Prize, among others. His second book, When Our Bodies Disappear (forthcoming, UC Press), follows the journey of one migrant family as they flee their home country of Honduras and attempt to remake their lives in Mexico.
Levi is currently a contributing writer for Jacobin. His writing, audio, video, and photography have additionally appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, and NPR. Before coming to CUNY, he was the Guerrant Professor of Global Health Equity at the University of Virginia and received his PhD in the Joint Program in Medical Anthropology from UC Berkeley - UC San Francisco in 2023.
A two-time Fulbright fellow to Mexico, he splits time between New York, Mexico City, and his hometown in rural Georgia.
