    Why Gender Studies?
The Gender Studies major and minor examine gender as a social construct that shapes power, inequality, and social organization, with a particular emphasis on justice, activism, and institutional change.

Through an interdisciplinary approach, the major equips students with skills in critical thinking, research, and writing, while also fostering a commitment to social justice and advocacy. Typically the major (and minor) helps students in securing positions in corrections and reentry services, probation and parole, law enforcement, legal services, nonprofit and community-based organizations, and work addressing gender-based violence.

Every field of knowledge incorporates gender perspectives, as gender shapes how questions are framed and how knowledge is produced. Applying a gender lens, especially in areas like law and criminal justice, reveals inequalities, challenges bias, and supports more just and effective policies and practices.
