Zephan Patterson

Dear Bloodhounds,

My name is Zephan Patterson, and I am a Junior running for President of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Student Council. As a first-generation college student, student leadership has always been my passion.

Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of serving as Vice President and working closely with students, representatives, and administration. Through that experience, I’ve learned something important: students don’t just want events — they want impact. They want clarity. They want follow-through.

As President, my focus is not just on programming. It is progress.

My vision centers on three commitments:

1. Institutional Impact: The Student Council should be more than event-based — it should be influential. I will prioritize structured meetings with administration, clearer advocacy pipelines, and documented follow-ups so our student concerns don’t get lost in conversation.

2. Organizational Strength: A strong Student Council starts internally. I will implement clearer role expectations, stronger rep engagement, and leadership development opportunities so our council operates with professionalism, unity, and purpose.

3. Campus Experience & Legacy: I want to elevate the student experience in ways that are sustainable. That means intentional programming, stronger CUNY-wide collaboration, and initiatives that leave lasting improvements beyond one academic year.

Leadership, to me, is about building systems that outlast one person.

John Jay deserves a Student Council that is strategic, accountable, and bold in its advocacy. If elected President, I will lead with clarity, conviction, and a commitment to real results — not just promises.

Stronger Together. Led With Vision.

With Love & Respect,
Zephan Patterson

Funding with Transparency

Hello Blood Hounds,

My name is Valeria Pavia Marin, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for Student Council Treasurer. Many of you may remember that I ran for Sophomore representative on the platform of “Advancing Justice Through Technology,” which continues to guide my approach to leadership, advocacy, and today's issues, both in person and online.

As a Computer Science and Information Security major with a minor in Economics, I am proud to represent the STEM community. During my two years serving as a Freshman and a Sophomore representative on Student Council, I have learned that true leadership means listening, being transparent, and consistently following through.

One initiative I am proud of is bringing The Giving Corner to life, where we provided food, clothing, and brand-new toys to John Jay students and student-parents. This project reminded me that sometimes impact starts with using what we already have. If elected Treasurer, I will continue expanding the Giving Corner to address community needs, because at the end of the day, we shouldn’t just settle for what we have but rather build on what we lack.

I joined Student Council so I could be a voice for students who felt hesitant or afraid to raise concerns or seek the resources they needed to thrive, and today that commitment has only grown stronger. I have witnessed clubs struggle with unclear funding policies, deadlines, and procedures. Miscommunication must never stand in the way of student success.

For my platform as treasurer, I will be “Funding with Transparency,” which means simplifying processes, clearly outlining expectations, and providing timely updates on allocations and approvals. I will work to create accessible funding guides, host workshops, and strengthen communication between the Student Council and organizations.

Being able to do anything alone is challenging, so I need your support! By supporting me throughout this journey, you will help me gather feedback from across all areas so I can identify the most effective actions to support your needs and those of others.

I look forward to working with you to build a brighter future for John Jay!

-Valeria Pavia Marin

Evelin Rosario Morales

Dear Students of John Jay,

My name is Evelin Rosario Morales, and I’m excited to announce my candidacy to become your next 2026-2027 Student Council Secretary. I currently serve as the Sophomore Representative, and during my first year at John Jay, I served as a Freshman Representative. As well as serving on the Committee for Commencement Activity (CCA) for two consecutive years, which works to ensure seniors have a yearbook, commencement activities, graduation pictures, and, overall, an amazing last year as a college student at John Jay. I also serve on the Committee on Student Representation, where I serve alongside other members of the council and the vice president in reviewing Student Council applications.

If chosen to serve as the Secretary of the Student Council, I aim to be transparent, organized, and accessible to all students. I will make sure to record and keep the official Student Council meeting information secure. I proudly served for two years in CCA, which trained me to understand the duties of each member in the committee, including the Secretary's. I will also ensure that the student body knows what's happening behind the scenes. I aim to inform the student body of everything that affects them negatively or positively by constantly updating our minute meeting discussion folder on our Student Council website as well as on the Student Council Instagram page. Another goal that I aim to achieve is informing the graduating class of everything happening regarding the graduation process, from the yearbook process to venues to graduation pictures and more. I will make sure budgets for senior and Student Council necessities are well taken care of and safe.

I listen, take action, and respond with purpose!

Greetings!

I am running for Student Council because not only am I a familiar face and trusted peer, but I know firsthand the challenges students encounter, and I want to ensure that every voice is not just heard but represented in decisions that impact our daily lives. Because I know John Jay is more than a campus, but a community in which I am committed to being a part of nurturing it.

Through being a part of the community, I can understand my fellow students' real experiences. Trying to maintain classwork, jobs, and personal responsibilities is never easy and too often, students' needs are overlooked. I will become a bridge uniting students and administration, advocating for solutions, transparency, and initiatives that will convey the realities we encounter daily.

Additionally, I would like to fortify the connections across our camps. From supporting clubs to promoting inclusive events, my aspiration is to construct opportunities that unite students, celebrate our diversity, and enable everyone to feel empowered and valued, building a campus culture. The ability for a campus to have such a strong foundation helps build a place where students can feel secure, supported, and proud of where they belong. However, the loss of the foundation, the sense of community. John Jay has worked so arduously to build, which could possibly be weakened.

Responsibility and results are the main factors of leadership, not status. I am prepared to be a reliable, proactive voice that will dedicate myself to turning student concerns into real progress. If I am elected, I will consistently and passionately protect, represent, and elevate the voices of my fellow students.

Kashfia Kotha

Greetings!

Hi everyone, my name is Kashfia Kotha, and I am running to be the upcoming Sophomore Student Representative. I truly believe I am a great candidate for this position because I want to build a community where every student feels included and represented. My main goal as a Sophomore student representative is to create a strong and positive change for my peers, along with creating a better bond and communication between the students themselves, as well as the administration. I was also once a student who didn't feel confident enough to share their ideas out loud. Still, I was able to teach myself to present my passion and ideals to others, and I want to create the same opportunity for my peers who have extravagant ideas that can be used for the betterment of our school and society. I think that when students feel valued, heard, and physically see a change, they are more likely to feel connected and will naturally be involved with school affairs and events, which would be great for our community building. Previously in my high school I earned the opportunity to lead my school's MSA as the president and as the member in a few different clubs, organizing events, creating meetings and fundraisers which allowed me to work closely with the faculty as well as the students and taught me skills like problem solving, taking responsibility and handling situations as student and as a supervisor when needed. I also volunteered in my neighborhood's local mosque and public library, which allowed me to improve my communication, teamwork, and leadership skills, which I plan on improving further and using in the future. As I move forward in college, I plan on using these skills to help others with their visions. Help them bring it to reality, and I'm dedicated to putting in the effort, time, and work that is required to strengthen our community and make a change.

Thank you for reading my application and considering me as an upcoming Sophomore Student Representative.

Lauren Aguilar Tlapa

Dear Bloodhounds,

My name is Lauren Aguilar Tlapa, and I am excited to    announce my candidacy for Sophomore Representative.

I am currently an upper freshman majoring in Criminal Justice with a minor in Law. My academic interests have strengthened my passion for advocacy, fairness, and   giving others a voice. Outside of class, I enjoy reading, crafting, and spending time with family and friends.

As your Sophomore Representative, I will make sure your ideas are heard, your concerns are addressed, and I will work to create a year full of opportunities, events, and memorable experiences for our class. I want everyone to feel included, engaged, and heard.

This past year, I participated in the Student Council Shadow Program, where I gained hands-on experience advocating for students, organizing events, and turning ideas into action alongside the freshman representatives. These experiences have shaped my understanding of the Student Council and strengthened my ability to collaborate, communicate effectively, and follow through on initiatives that matter.

If elected, I plan to focus on three primary areas: increasing student engagement, improving access to resources, and strengthening communication between students and the Student Council. I want to make sure every Bloodhound knows about the opportunities available at John Jay and feels supported. My objective is to collaborate with other representatives in order to create more events and initiatives that allow our class to connect, collaborate, and have fun while building a stronger, more united community.

With your support, I will work tirelessly to make our sophomore year one we will all remember and be proud of.

Your voice, your representative,

Lauren Aguilar Tlapa

Dear John Jay College Community,

My name is Zaira Chowdhury, but many of you may know me as freshman                         representative Zai. It is with deep honor to announce that I am running for Sophomore Representative at Student Council. I am a Criminal Justice Bachelor of Science major with a minor in Law. I aspire to be a litigation attorney because my heart has always been in the courtroom, speaking for those who don’t have a voice. The reason why I want to continue to represent is that I want to work more closely with my peers and students as a future sophomore representative. I have loved connecting with freshmen and putting together events for my fellow freshmen. I want to continue the great work I have been doing with my colleagues at Student Council as a possible sophomore representative. My goal as a sophomore representative is to continue to be the voice of my peers and classmates while also continuing to grow as a leader. We are living through a time of     political unrest and tension. I want to use the voice that I have established within the student government to be a fierce advocate for justice. I want to continue to make the transition from high school to college seamless and less nerve-wracking for my freshmen, and I strive to create community and unity for my sophomores. I am and always will be for the people. Put your trust in me, and I will make sure to step up to the plate as your Sophomore representative. Challenge my faults because you believe in my promise.

Dear John Jay College Community,

My name is Daniel Lazaro, and I am running for Student Council at John Jay for the first time. Even though I have not served on the council before, I am ready to step up, work hard, and represent the students with dedication and honesty. I believe every student deserves to feel heard and respected. One issue I would like to point out is communication between the students and the council. Many students are not always aware of the events or the important decisions that are happening on campus. I want to help improve that and inform the students, and to make them feel included. Better communication is better because it can help build trust and a stronger connection within our community. Another important issue I would like to addon is the student involvement. Some students feel unsure how to join clubs or attend the events that are posted. I want to support more engaging activities and promote the clubs so the students feel more comfortable getting involved. College should not only be about attending classes or just working alone, but it’s also meant to build friendships, join clubs, and have fun, creating memories in college. I also want to discuss is on the student support. Students deal with the academic pressure, stress they may be having, or personal challenges. If I’m elected, I will listen to concerns and bring those ideas to the council, and I will work towards the solutions that will benefit every student. If I am elected, I promise to stay committed, responsible, and active around campus. I may be new to Student Council, but I am motivated and ready to step up. I want to be a strong voice for students and help make John Jay a better place for us all.

As a member of the John Jay Student Body running for Class Representative, I aim for transparency and education to reflect my cohort’s concerns.

John Jay has a considerable number of students, and, after asking for signatures, many of them questioned the Student Council's responsibilities and who their class representatives were. Should I win the election for Class Representative, I hope to educate my cohort on my responsibilities as a Class Representative and the resources John Jay has to offer, as some people forget they exist or don’t understand how to engage in those opportunities and aid. In addition to education, I hope to run on transparency and communication, as some students have complaints about certain facilities and have asked if it is within the bounds of the Student Council.

Secondly, on John Jay resources, I hope to invite people to check out. Such as creating a club, reviving a club, and joining. Previously, one of my friends wanted to make a club and didn't know how. So I looked at the John Jay website, conducted some research, and provided them with the necessary tools to begin.

Third, my cohort has raised some concerns about recent political events, such as ICE and Immigration. I hope to address their concerns and communicate what’s within my power and direct them to the proper channels.

Lastly, within the bounds of transparency and education, I hope to keep my cohort updated on what I will be doing and my weekly efforts or progress while in office to solve the problem between the general population of those who are more involved in Student Government and John Jay Events.

Muktadir Alam

 Hi Everyone!

My name is Muktadir Alam, and I am a Bengali Queens native majoring in Law & Society here at John Jay, and I am running to be your Junior Representative. As a student who has previously attended Queensborough Community College as a dual-enrolled High School Student, and am now in my first year of attending college as a full-time student, I understand the difficulties and challenges that come with commuting and trying to find communion at school. During the Fall Semester of my first year here, I was granted the opportunity to shadow the Student Council and find a community at the Student Council Office. During my time as a Shadow, I was able to see that students struggle with finding time to come to events, and that they did not feel intrigued by the events happening. My fellow peers and classmates also expressed to me their struggles with making friends, finding community, and feeling like they belong. As your Junior representative, I want to create opportunities for students to find a place of communion amongst their peers, feel like they belong here in the college, and be intrigued by the events taking place. I hope to do this by creating events during the most available hours for all students to come drop by and meet others, while not feel obligated to a semester of commitment to clubs or other responsibilities outside of class. Through my time as a Student Council Shadow and as the Shadow lead, I want to express my ability to listen and lead with the desire to create change and innovate opportunities for all students.

Greetings, Fellow Bloodhounds!

This past year, serving as your Sophomore Representative showed me what student government is really about, not just planning events, but actually listening to students and turning ideas into real experiences. I’m running for Junior Representative because I want to keep building on the work I’ve already started and continue being someone students can genuinely rely on. During my time on the student council, I helped host multiple events that brought students together outside of class. As a commuter school, it can sometimes feel like everyone just comes to campus and leaves right after lectures. I want to change that by creating more opportunities for students to connect, relax, and feel like John Jay is more than just a place we attend; it’s a community we’re part of. My focus as Junior Representative is simple: better communication, stronger student involvement, and events that students actually want to attend. I want students to feel comfortable sharing concerns, ideas, or even small suggestions because every voice matters. I also hope to collaborate more with clubs and cultural organizations so campus life reflects the diversity and energy of our student body. Having already served as a representative, I understand the responsibility that comes with this role and how to get things done. I’m not starting from scratch. I’m coming in with experience, ideas, and motivation to do even more. I’m running to continue advocating for you, amplifying student voices, and helping make John Jay feel like a campus where everyone belongs.

Greetings!

I am running for the position of Senior Representative because I want to represent the voices and concerns of senior students at John Jay College. As seniors, we are at an important stage in our academic journey where many of us are preparing for graduation, searching for internships or jobs, and thinking about our future careers or graduate studies. I believe the Student Council should support students during this transition and help make sure seniors have access to the resources they need.

One of the issues I would like to focus on is improving communication between students and the college. Many students are not always aware of the services and opportunities available on campus. If elected, I want to help share important information about career services, internships, academic support, and student resources so that seniors can better prepare for life after graduation.

Another goal I hope to achieve is encouraging more engagement between students and the Student Council. Students should feel comfortable sharing their ideas, concerns, and suggestions. As a Senior Representative, I will listen to my classmates and bring their feedback to the Student Council so their voices can be heard.

I also want to support initiatives that help students succeed academically and professionally. This can include promoting career workshops, networking opportunities, and programs that help students develop skills for their future.

Overall, my goal is to represent senior students honestly and responsibly. I want to help create a supportive environment where students feel informed, involved, and prepared for the next step after John Jay College.

Portrait of Samsul

Samsul Arifen Khan

Hello Fellow John Jay Students,

I am Samsul Arifen Khan, and I am running for Senior Representative because I believe every student deserves to be heard, respected, and represented with honesty. I was born and raised in Bangladesh, and coming to New York to study at John Jay has been one of the most meaningful journeys of my life. As a transfer student, I understand what it feels like to enter a new system, adjust to a new culture, and try to find your place while carrying responsibilities, goals, and pressure.

John Jay is built on justice, fairness, and opportunity. Those values are not just words to me. They are personal. I have faced challenges that many of you face. Balancing academics, work, financial responsibilities, and family expectations is not easy. Sometimes students feel unheard. Sometimes we feel like our concerns stay inside classrooms, hallways, or private conversations and never reach decision makers. I want to change that.

My platform is simple and clear. I want to be a bridge between students and leadership. I want to create more open communication where students feel comfortable sharing concerns about academics, campus resources, mental health, financial aid, internships, and career preparation. As someone studying Computer Science and Information Security, and working in tech related roles on campus, I understand how important career access, networking, and skill development are for our future. I want to push for stronger career readiness programs and more transparency about opportunities available to seniors before graduation.

I also stand for inclusion. John Jay is incredibly diverse. Our strength comes from students of different races, cultures, religions, and backgrounds learning together. I respect all opinions, even when they are different from mine. A representative should never silence voices. A representative should listen first, understand deeply, and speak responsibly.

I am not running for a title. I am running because I truly care. I want to be the voice for students who hesitate to speak up, for transfer students adjusting to a new environment, for international students finding their path, and for seniors preparing for life after graduation. I promise to serve with integrity, empathy, and action.

If you believe in representation that is real, grounded, and student-focused, I ask for your support. Let’s build a stronger John Jay together.

Greetings!

I am a first-generation student in higher education. I can attest that I am a good candidate for a graduate representative in the student council through my experiences and educational standpoint. Experiences such as a policy advocate, in New York Foundling, where I advocate for funding by building relationships with officials, while also drafting policy memos, and conducting qualitative research to evaluate programs and propose improvements. Also, I am a justice advocate in the Police Reform Organizing Project, where it demonstrates my deepened commitment to equity and service by monitoring court proceedings for signs of discrimination. Lastly, as a case developer in Community Mediation Services, where I have enhanced my open-mindedness, I use a mediation approach to handle issues.

Along with the completion of my education achievements, completing my Bachelor's in Criminology, minor in Psychology, and a certification in Conflict Dispute Resolution. And at this moment, my attempts to complete my Masters Public Policy and Administration.

Both my life and work experiences have made me well prepared in ensuring my commitment to the office for the people as well as my commitment to not act for myself interest. Nonetheless, I have experienced barriers and obstacles from my diagnosis of tinnitus (non-cancerous but still harmful), and I remained resilient and adapted. As an individual who works well with people, as a unity of leadership, a key factor to ensure graduate representation is effective in delivering, and grants the opportunity to dissolve the current limitations as a graduate representative.

Looking into the future, as a graduate representative, my goal is to give back to my fellow graduate students. I will do this by utilizing and applying models, which have been proven to be successful in organizations, such as the bottom line, to meet the needs of my fellow graduates. Additionally, I will work face-to-face with fellow graduates, also collaborating with administrators, faculty, and various clubs to ensure graduate needs are met. I also hope to assess the engagement and involvement from graduate students, where I can effectively conduct additional events that bring awareness and a voice to this underrepresented community. Nonetheless, there is no promise to only strive for this key goal, but a promise to increase engagement and satisfaction from prior student council representatives.

Hello Fellow John Jay, Students,

I’m a New York City native human rights scholar, a proud mother of four New York City kids, completing my second master’s degree in international Crime and Justice at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, alongside an Advanced Certificate in Transnational Organized Crime Studies. I previously earned an M.A. in Human Rights with Highest Distinction.

Through my service as a Tow Policy Advocacy Fellow with the Correctional Association of New York, I contributed to legislative strategy, oversight-informed reform, and trauma-informed policy development. Serving this year as the Graduate Student Representative on Council has been both an honor and a steep learning curve. Coming in new, I had to quickly understand the Council’s procedures, timelines, and decision-making pathways—while also earning trust, building relationships across campus, and learning how to translate graduate student concerns into actionable priorities within the structure that exists. There is still significant work ahead, and continuing this role is about building momentum—not starting over.

Like many students' balancing coursework, work, and family responsibilities, I’ve navigated those demands while staying present and consistent in Council work. That first-year adjustment has clarified what works, what needs improvement, and where graduate student voices can be amplified more effectively.

I’m running to continue into next year because the foundation is now in place—relationships are built, the systems are familiar, and I’m ready to deepen impact by turning lessons learned into stronger advocacy, clearer communication, and sustained follow-through for the graduate community. While continuing to build unity in leadership, my focus is to keep doing the work, expanding graduate student input, strengthening accountability, and turning lessons learned into concrete improvements that last beyond a single term.

-Raven Leigertwood

From Wellington, New Zealand. Graduated in May 2025 from Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, earning Summa Cum Laude honors. Currently pursuing my Master’s in International Crime & Justice at John Jay with an Advanced Certificate in Transnational Organised Crime. Proud to be part of the John Jay women’s soccer team, which recently won the 2025 CUNYAC Championship, One Love! As your current graduate representative and as I run for re-election, I will continue building on the work we have started together. If re-elected, I will continue striving to create an experience that you will remember and genuinely enjoy, one that supports you in all aspects of life. My focus will remain on strengthening culture, camaraderie, and positive change within our graduate community while continuing to build unity in leadership. I remain committed to serving our community, advocating for justice, and creating opportunities that benefit all students, especially where support is needed most. As graduate students, I will continue to ensure that all our voices are heard, our needs are supported, and our community continues to grow stronger together. I will continue helping create a graduate experience that goes beyond the classroom, because school should be a place where we learn, connect, support one another, and still have fun while growing together. I will continue working on interactive programming, including panels, community service opportunities, casual graduate social events, and professional development resources that help students succeed beyond the program. I will also continue working with departments to promote research engagement and host thought-provoking conversations about today’s world and the issues that matter to us. I am here to listen, collaborate, and keep working to help our graduate community thrive and continue doing great things together!

Kind Regards,

Abu Bokkor Siddik

Dear Fellow Bloodhounds,

My name is Abu Bokkor Siddik, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for Transfer Representative. As a transfer student, I understand how challenging it can be to adapt to a new academic environment while balancing coursework, career planning, and personal                     responsibilities. Transfer students often have limited time to connect, get involved, and fully experience campus life. I am running because I want to ensure that every transfer student feels supported, informed, and represented.

My leadership journey began at LaGuardia Community College, where I served as a Student Senator in the College Senate. In that role, I represented student voices in shared governance, collaborated with faculty and administration, and contributed to discussions on policies and student concerns. I also served as a SAC Rep. for the LHI Club, where I worked with nonprofit organizations such as the Malala Fund and Food Bank NYC to support community initiatives. I also served as a Student Representative on the Budget and Finance Committee, where I contributed to discussions regarding student funding and

resource allocation. These experiences strengthened my commitment to advocacy, communication, and inclusive leadership.

If I am elected as Transfer Representative, I will focus on improving communication between transfer students and campus leadership, increasing awareness of internships and career development opportunities, and creating stronger networking and engagement initiatives specifically for transfer students. I believe advocacy means listening first and taking action responsibly. Together, we can build a stronger and more connected transfer student community at John Jay.

I humbly ask for your support.

Greetings!

From one transfer student to another, transferring isn’t just a new school. It’s a reset. New faces. New systems. New expectations. And somehow we’re supposed to figure it all out fast. That urgency? I feel it too.

I currently serve as your Transfer Representative and Chair for Transfer Representatives, and I don’t take that lightly. I’ve sat in rooms where decisions are made about our community. I’ve worked across departments to bring real resources to transfer students, not just events for pictures, but programming with purpose. Career development. Networking access. Collaboration with offices that actually open doors.

But I’ve also worked in the background to make initiatives happen. I’ve built friendships with many of you. I’ve helped create a real sense of community, not forced, not surface level, but genuine. Walking around campus together. Grabbing boba. Talking through schedules and plans. Turning confusion into clarity.

And I want to expand that.

There are transfer students out there trying to figure it all out alone. You don’t have to.

Because we didn’t transfer here just to get by. We came here to grow. My mission is simple: make your transition smoother, your opportunities bigger, and your voice louder.

As your representative, I will listen. I will communicate. And I will work consistently.

Work to expand internship and career pathways. Work to strengthen transparency and accountability.

Work to ensure transfer voices lead to real impact.

You made the right decision choosing John Jay. Now let’s make sure John Jay shows up for you.

Let’s build. Let’s grow. Let’s lead.

Together.

Starting at a new college as a transfer student can feel like being dropped into the middle of a story that's already in progress. You're excited for what's ahead, but at the same time, you're trying to figure out where you fit in. Transferring to John Jay from my experience was exciting, I understand that it can also be overwhelming at times. We have less time to get settled, build connections, and figure out what we want to do next. We arrive ready to chase our goals, but the pressure to do everything quickly and successfully can feel intense.

When I transferred to John Jay last semester after graduating from Bronx Community College, I realized how important it is to have support and community. I got to witness how the Student Council operates on a day-to-day basis. I’m running for Transfer Representative, not only because there have been multiple people around campus from the Dominican Student Association to the Student Council (shoutout to them) who have encouraged me to run for this position, but also because transfer students at John Jay deserve someone who truly understands their experience and is ready to advocate for what they want to see on campus.

If elected, I will represent the transfer students with honesty, hard work, and dedication. I want to make sure your voices are heard. Alongside my colleagues, I hope to help organize events and create welcoming spaces where transfer students can connect socially and academically.

Transparency is important to me. You deserve to know what's happening on campus, from meetings and events to opportunities and resources. My goal is to be someone transfer students can turn to if they ever feel lost, unheard, or in need of support.

Let’s maximize our time together!

Akaylah Rose

Hello Bloodhounds!

My name is Akaylah Rose, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for USS Delegate for the 2026-2027 academic year. To me, John Jay is more than just a college; we are a community, and like any strong leader, I am dedicated to serving my community, you, the students of John Jay. For the past year, I have served as the Chief of Communications for John Jay Dreamers, and most recently, I have been appointed as the College Council at Large alternate. Through these roles, I have had the chance to hear from you, my fellow students. I have heard your voices and the need for an advocate, someone to create representation, not just for our community as a whole but for each individual. I am motivated to run for this position because, through my strong leadership qualities, I know that I can and will be that advocate and representation. Like many of you, I envision a bright future for our college. I am a firm believer in the power of student voices, and I know that when we work together, we can make changes. As a leader, I strive to be a dependable and friendly face on campus. My goal is to advance and improve student life through various academic and social initiatives that unite students and staff and support underrepresented students on campus, like our low-income and immigrant students. I do not believe leadership is just about one person, it’s teamwork and collaboration, which is why as a USS delegate, I am committed to working with you and for you.

With Love, Akayla

Ashfia Snaha

Hi, my name is Ashfia Snaha and I am running for the position of University Student Senate as a rising Sophomore. As a rising sophomore, I am not running for University Student Senate just to hold a title but I am running to make an impact. In my first year, I experienced both the excitement of new opportunities and the challenges that come with navigating a large university. I’ve seen how easy it is for student voices, especially those of underclassmen, to go unheard. That needs to change. Every student deserves to feel represented, informed, and empowered. If I am elected, I will prioritize transparency, stronger communication between students and administration, and real accessibility in student leadership. I want to create clearer pathways for students to share their concerns and ideas, whether through open forums, regular updates, or direct outreach. Leadership should not feel distant or exclusive, but it should feel responsive and accountable. I am also committed to advocating for stronger academic support, expanded mental health resources, and campus programming that reflects the diversity and energy of our student body. John Jay already offers these amazing support systems, but I want to stand by my peers and the students to make the community stronger and wholesome. Our university should be a place where every student, regardless of major, background, or year, feels supported and connected. I am ready to listen, ready to lead, and ready to work. This is about more than promises; it's about action! We can build a campus community that is more inclusive, more transparent, and stronger for everyone. John Jay already has such amazing events and campus activities, making students feel even closer to each other, and I hope to both help with these

events and also be able to hear the problems of the John Jay community and bring solutions that can impact the lives of both students, staff, and professors at John Jay.

Benjamin Wade

Greetings!

While others are just beginning their journey into student politics, I am already in the room fighting for you. I am Benjamin Wade, and I’m running for USS Delegate because John Jay students deserve more than just a seat at the table; we deserve a leader who knows how to speak the language of the Legislature and understands the operations of our Board of Trustees. My work is focused on three essential pillars for the 2026 academic year:

● The Commuter Tax: For too many of us, the cost of transit is a barrier to education. I am actively advocating for a $1.4 million pilot program to provide free OMNY cards, ensuring that John Jay commuters are not taxed solely for attending class.

● Infrastructure Modernization: Our campus should reflect the excellence of its students. I am advocating for John Jay’s fair share of CUNY’s $21.6 million State budget request to finally fix our campus Wi-Fi and modernize our learning spaces, physically and digitally, to meet 21st-century standards.

● The Wellness Crisis: I am committed to expanding CUNY CARES, securing a portion of the $4.6 million mental health budget specifically for our students' wellness. We must ensure these resources are accessible for ALL students.

In USS, your delegate is your lobbyist. I have the knowledge of the USS Bylaws and the fiscal accountability experience to ensure John Jay is never the "forgotten campus" when funding gets allocated.

Don't just vote for a name. Vote for the candidate who is already doing the work.

Let’s get John Jay its fair share.

Portrait of Davia Willis

Davia Willis

Hey all,

It’s me again, and for those that don’t know me, my name is Davia Willis, and I am an international student from the island of Jamaica. I am a dual BS/MA in Criminal Justice student here at John Jay, and I am a part of the class of 2027.

Previously, I was elected as the Undergrad USS delegate, where I represented the voices of undergrad students of John Jay in the CUNY University Student Senate (USS). Having taken this position with pride and dedication, I noticed that my graduate counterpart lacked representation on their behalf in the Senate. Due to this, the voice of graduate students and the concerns, questions, or experiences we have and undergo were not being amplified in the ears of those who shape our individual and collective experiences.

To remedy this, I am vying to be the voice that speaks out on the issues graduate students face, and to ensure that there is always representation in the spaces that require the input of students. Given the work I have done in the senate as an undergrad representative, being one of the leaders spearheading the Free OMNY Card campaign to ensure affordable and equitable access to transportation for all students, I am confident in my abilities to speak effectively on behalf of graduate students, raising awareness to the opportunities and access that are exclusive to this group.

Collaborating with the incoming undergrad representatives will ensure full representation for John Jay, and as someone with firsthand knowledge and experience, I ask for your support in continuing to contribute to the development of our campus and, by extension CUNY Community.

So, I ask for your vote, because if not Davia Willis for Graduate USS Delegate- then who?

-Davia Willis

Fredericka Walker

Hello John Jay Student, Body, I am Fredericka Walker, a junior transfer from Columbia University, studying Public Administration. I am running for University Student Senate Undergraduate Representative. As an USS Undergraduate Rep., I will have the honor of representing the John Jay Student Body at the CUNY level.

As one of two representatives, I will be joining USS Reps from all 25 CUNY institutions with CUNY Administrators to run our city’s robust college system. I bring a strong administrative background in higher education, working as a Residential Assistant and Senior Residential Manager at Brown University and Columbia University’s Pre-College Programs. Additionally, as a Student Life Intern at Columbia’s Academic Year Program.

My experience guiding high school students through college environments, leadership experience managing a team of interns, accountability handling and reporting financial expenditures, and voicing student/intern concerns, goes hand-in-hand with the work I will carry out as a Senator on behalf of our John Jay community.

The goal of my tenure is to earnestly communicate the needs of John Jay students at the CUNY level. As a member of the Senate, I will sit on subcommittees that are focused on a particular governing aspect of CUNY. To accomplish this commitment, I will create weekly opportunities for students to engage with me during community hour to voice any comments and concerns related to their experience as a CUNY student. Knowing what works and what does not is paramount for every successful operation.

In union with communicating the voices of John Jay, my focus as Student Senator will be on educational standards, fiscal planning/tuition, and academic affairs. Our CUNY system is an incredible organization that I want to bring into greater contact with our John Jay community.

Thank you for considering my candidacy for University Student Senate Undergraduate Representative.

All the best,

Fredericka Walker

Mashura Pinthy

Dear Students of John Jay,

Hello everyone, my name is Mashura Pinthy, and I’m      running for the University Student Senate position. As a Political Science major, I’ve become more interested in how policies affect students like us, because the           decisions made here impact our daily lives directly. I want to become an active voice for the students at our college. We have so many events, opportunities, and resources. But I believe there is always space to grow to ensure that the student government works for the students. If elected, I want to focus on advocacy for   students facing hardships. No student dealing with food or housing        insecurity, struggles, or other challenges should feel    excluded because they do not meet certain eligibility   criteria. I may not know every detail on how these policies are created, but I do know that life is unpredictable and hardships don’t always fit neatly into categories. We can expand our policies to ensure the inclusion of everyone. And most importantly, I want to become someone whom the students can come to with any concerns, ideas, or suggestions about policies they want to improve or      propose. I want to be approachable. I want to listen. Again, if elected to the University Student Senate, I want to represent  students with the mindset that everything around us was once just an idea or belief, and ideas become reality when one chooses to take action. I believe in our students. I believe in our school. And I believe that when we change what we think is possible, we can change everything.

-Mashura Pinthy

Portrait of Anwarul Azim

Anwarul Azim

My name is Anwarul Azim, and I am running for International Student Representative because I understand the challenges we face navigating careers, finances, and campus life at John Jay.

Currently, I work as a Communications Assistant in the Office of Enrollment Management at John Jay College. I see daily how systems can either support students or create barriers. My own journey—balancing internships, research, on-campus work, and leadership—has shown me what's possible when students have the right guidance and opportunities.

International students don't just need jobs—we need employers who understand CPT (Curricular Practical Training) and OPT (Optional Practical Training). I have seen talented students struggle to find internships because companies hesitate to navigate international hiring.

I will work directly with the Center for Career & Professional Development to:

  • Bring employers already willing to sponsor CPT/OPT to campus career fairs
  • Host workshops explaining the internship search process step by step
  • Create a peer network where students share internship leads and experiences

On-campus jobs that build U.S. work experience and professional networks. Yet many students face confusing applications or don't know where to start. As someone currently working on campus, I understand both the value of these roles and the barriers to getting them.

I will advocate for:

  • Clearer guidance on finding and applying for on-campus positions
  • Better communication between career services and international students

Tuition for international students is nearly double, and scholarships are scarce. This financial weight affects students’ focus.

I will advocate for more scholarships and financial support specifically for international students—because reducing financial burden doesn't just help us pay bills; it frees us to engage in research, internships, extracurriculars, and volunteering that enrich both our education and the John Jay community. When students worry less about money, they contribute more—to classrooms, to campus life, and to each other.

WHY VOTE FOR ME?

Because I don't just talk about problems—I have spent years serving communities. As an Intern in the New York State Senate, a volunteer with New York Cares, and now as a Communications Assistant at John Jay, I know how to listen, advocate, and deliver results.

I understand the international student experience—but more importantly, I have the experience, connections, and commitment to turn our shared concerns into real change.

Let's build a John Jay where every student—regardless of status—has the support to succeed.

-Anwarul Azim

Mohanmed Nissi Nsiah

Hello, John Jay community. My name is Mohanmed Nissi Nsiah, but I prefer to go by Nissi. I am currently an upper sophomore majoring in political science. I enjoy cooking, watching movies, and listening to music. For the upcoming academic year, I plan on applying for the position of College Council at Large as part of John Jay's student council. I am currently a freshman representative tasked with improving student life and morale for all freshmen, through initiatives and events, allowing their freshman year in college and transition from high school to be as smooth and as fun as it can be. I would like to expand my reach and gain new experience, serving the community of students as a whole, hence running for this new position. As a college council at large representative, my job would be to serve the entire college student body by representing each diverse voice and interest beyond specific class standings or groups. We bring forward student concerns, contribute ideas for campus-wide initiatives, and support the council in planning and promoting events that benefit the general institution. With this in mind, I believe I am a strong candidate for this position as due to my involvement with student council, being a part of clubs such as ASA (African student association), Law and Society, MBK, UMI and working to create my own Mock trial club, i encounter students from all ages and all walks of life, representing and fraternizing with them one way or another playing a key role in ensuring inclusivity amongst all and equipped with the experience of connecting different parts of the college community together as one unit.

Fredericka Walker

Hello John Jay Student Body, I am Fredericka Walker, a junior transfer from Columbia University, studying Public Administration. I am running for a seat on the Faculty-Student Disciplinary Committee. As a sitting member, I will offer a student perspective on disciplinary hearings.

I want to run for this position because character and growth are core parts of our progression as young adults. Mistakes do not have to be final, nor do consequences have to be permanent. I look forward to bringing my extensive background in higher education, working as a Residential Assistant and Senior Residential Manager at Brown University and Columbia University’s Pre-College Programs. Additionally, as a Student Life Intern at Columbia’s Academic Year Program.

Furthermore, I look forward to the opportunity to work alongside our John Jay Faculty on the committee to ensure John Jay’s pride and principles are upheld by all members of our community while again creating opportunities for accountability in the wake of disciplinary intervention.

As a part of the committee, I am interested in hearing students’ perspectives within the larger John Jay community. Behaviors which may require disciplinary action can stem from various reasons including, personal stressors, differing cultural norms, and social pressures.

If elected, I want to provide students with the opportunity to discuss the climate of our John Jay community in addition to the ability to find me on a routine basis within Hound Square to have conversations and engage throughout the semester.

In order to best represent our student body on the Faculty-Student Disciplinary Committee, I want your support in continued dialogue throughout the school year to best serve as a committee member.

Thank you for considering my candidacy for the Faculty-Student Disciplinary Committee.

All the best,
Fredericka Walker
