The first, examines the impact of domestic violence on undocumented women and the barriers they face in seeking help in NYC. This involves in-depth qualitative interviews with undocumented women who have experienced domestic violence; immigration and family law attorneys and domestic violence advocates. It aims to explore the feelings of personal insecurity and precariousness felt by undocumented women as a result of the violence, familial relationships, language barriers and access to appropriate services against current political concerns over national security and immigration policies. The second part of the study places women's fear and reality over deportation in NYC in a wider context, by considering the situation elsewhere in the country and comparing this to other colonial-settler societies, in relation to nation- building and the violence of the state. Women's private experiences of domestic violence being compounded by the more public violence of the state.

2018 John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Office for the Advancement of Research, Senior Scholar Release. This was for two research projects: the ‘Imagining Rikers’ project, which tells the story of the jail complex on Rikers Island: focusing on the history of the island itself from the early 1860s when it was used as a training ground for the 20th Colored Regiment and as prisoner of war facility for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War, to early debates on prison reform and discussions on the penitentiaries of New York City through to the present day. The project situates the history of Rikers Island in terms of its political, social and cultural context. And the Undocumented Migrants, Violence and Deportation project, which involves interviews largely with women who fear deportation and the lawyers who are trying to help them. This is placed in the context of academic debates on security and the current political crises/ rhetoric on deportation. It is being carried out with the Urban Justice Center, NYC
