The Master Of Arts In International Crime And Justice Invites You To A Guest Talk On Applied Qualitative Methods By May Pascaud
Date - May 1, 2026
Time - 4:30 pm to 5:45 pm
Location: Through Zoom

Bio: May Pascaud is a trilingual, mixed-methods international criminology scholar whose research explores the intersection between prisons, reentry, and reintegration, and the nonprofit sector. As a Franco-American scholar, she is interested in comparative perspectives on criminal justice, comparative penology, and international and transnational criminal justice theory. She is in the final stages of completing her PhD in Criminal Justice at John Jay College, and has recently accepted a new position as a Lecturer in Criminology at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Talk description: In this talk, May Pascaud explores the practical application of qualitative methods through the lens of her doctoral research conducted at an open prison in France. Drawing on a month of immersive fieldwork, she discusses the nuances of balancing rigorous academic preparation with the necessary adaptability of ethnographic study. The session will guide attendees through the lifecycle of a qualitative project, including:

  • Preparation & design: The critical role of theory in constructing semi-structured interview schedules.
  • Methods in practice: Navigating the dual demands of participant observation and in-depth interviewing within a carceral setting.
  • Methodological rigor: Utilizing data triangulation to enhance the validity of findings.
  • The reflexive researcher: Managing positionality and maintaining an awareness of one’s ontological perspective while in the field.
