Fall 2026 Application Cycle

Travel period: September–December 2026
Notification of decision: October 5–9, 2026

If your travel will occur before decisions are issued, contact the Student Travel Program as early as possible to discuss your application timeline.

Individual Domestic Travel

For one student traveling within the 50 United States.

Group Domestic Travel

For five or more students attending the same activity within the 50 United States. Submit one application for the group. Each participating student must provide the required individual documents.

Group travel requires a chaperone. Student Travel Program funding does not cover the chaperone’s expenses.

Study Abroad

For a student accepted into an approved John Jay or CUNY study abroad program who is requesting support for eligible transportation expenses.

Meet with the Office of International Studies & Programs before applying for Student Travel Program funding.

International Travel — Not Study Abroad

For educational travel outside the 50 United States that is not part of a study abroad program. Travel to Puerto Rico and other United States territories is considered international travel under CUNY procedures.

The Office of International Studies & Programs must verify all international travel.

  • Study Abroad Travel: contact the Study Abroad Coordinator, Daniel Braslavsky, at dbraslavsky@jjay.cuny.edu or call 212-887-6105 at least thirty days before an application deadline
  • International Travel (Non-Study Abroad): contact the Senior Director, Mayra Nieves, at mnieves@jjay.cuny.edu at least thirty days before an application deadline

2026–27 Application Calendar

Submit your application by the deadline for your planned travel period. All applications are due by 5:00 p.m.

September–December 2026 Travel

Application deadline: September 18, 2026
Notification of decision: October 5–9, 2026

January–March 2027 Travel

Application deadline: November 9, 2026
Notification of decision: December 7–11, 2026

April–August 2027 Travel

Application deadline: March 29, 2027
Notification of decision: May 3–7, 2027

Prepare Before You Apply

Required documents vary by travel category. Read the Student Travel Procedures to confirm what you must submit.

Prepare the applicable documents before opening the application:

  • Activity schedule or travel itinerary
  • Itemized budget
  • Current price quotes for each requested expense
  • Unofficial transcript
  • Required identification
  • Faculty or staff recommendation letter
  • Any additional documents required for group, study abroad, or international travel

Price documentation should come directly from the company or organization providing the registration, transportation, or lodging. You do not need to make a purchase to obtain pricing.

Make sure every document is complete, current, and readable before uploading it.

Strengthen Your Activity Description

The activity description is an important part of the application. Clearly explain:

  • What the activity is and why you want to participate
  • How it connects to your coursework, research, career plans, or professional development
  • What you expect to learn or accomplish
  • How the experience will benefit you or the John Jay community

Use the Travel Activity Criteria to help develop your response.

Request Your Recommendation Early

Ask a John Jay faculty or staff member for a recommendation early enough for it to be completed before the application deadline.

Review Before Submitting

Confirm that:

  • You selected the correct application.
  • Every required question is answered.
  • Your activity description is clear and specific.
  • Your budget is complete and itemized.
  • Current price quotes support the amounts requested.
  • All required documents are attached and readable.
  • Your contact information is accurate.

Incomplete applications may be denied.

After You Submit

Submitting an application does not guarantee funding or authorize travel. Do not make nonrefundable purchases or financial commitments before receiving a written decision and instructions from the Student Travel Program.

Applicants will receive a decision during the notification period listed in the application calendar.

Need Help?

Application reviews are available by appointment. The Student Travel Program cannot review applications during the final two business days before a deadline, so request assistance early.
