Welcome Dr. Amy Hyoeun Lee
A warm welcome to Dr. Amy Hyoeun Lee, who has joined the Psychology Department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice as a tenure track Assistant Professor this Spring.
Dr. Lee is a licensed clinical psychologist and scholar with expertise in childhood trauma-related mental health disparities, culturally responsive interventions, and youth- and family-focused cognitive behavioral therapies.
Dr. Lee earned her B.A. in Psychology and English from CUNY Queens College, her M.A. in Psychology from Stony Brook University, and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from St. John's University, where she specialized in the implementation and evaluation of evidence-based interventions for youth trauma-related mental health needs in community settings. She completed an APA-accredited internship in the Stony Brook University Consortium Internship Program (Child Track), followed by a joint postdoctoral fellowship in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry & Behavioral Health at Stony Brook University. Prior to joining John Jay College/CUNY, Dr. Lee was an Assistant Professor in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Program at Hofstra University.
Dr. Lee directs the Lab for Youth Trauma Recovery, whose work aims to facilitate mental health equity for youth of color with interpersonal trauma histories. To this end, she and her team conduct community-engaged and -partnered research focused on (1) identifying mechanisms linking interpersonal trauma to youth mental health trajectories, as well as the individual-, family-, and community-level protective factors that may buffer these links; and (2) reducing disparities in access to evidence-based, trauma-focused therapies for youth and communities of color by using innovative approaches to cultural tailoring and dissemination of such therapies. The lab’s work to date has been supported by funding from the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, the Society for Research in Child Development, and the American Psychological Foundation.
As a first-generation immigrant from South Korea, a CUNY graduate, and a native of Queens, NY, Dr. Lee’s work is shaped by both her personal and professional experiences of the strengths and resilience of local communities of color.
