POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Understand and provide accurate information regarding the curriculum, graduation requirements, university and college policies and procedures.
  • Assist incoming and continuing freshmen with appropriate course selection during registration periods.
  • Inform students about campus resources and when to use them.
  • Serve as a mentor to freshmen and sophomores, answer student questions, assist with phone and email outreach, schedule advising appointments, lead group workshops, and conduct one-on-one meetings with students.
  • Monitor and document peer advising contacts with students.
  • Assist students in gaining decision-making skills and assuming responsibility for their educational plans and achievements.
  • Treat students with respect and address their needs seriously and with confidentiality.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively engage with peers, students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment and ethical behavior.
  • Desire to assist students with their transition to college.
  • Ability to work as a team member and to be flexible.
  • Currently matriculated in an undergraduate program, have between 15–60 credits earned, and have a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA by the end of spring 2024. 

TIME COMMITMENT

  • Must commit to working on campus. In addition, must commit to one full academic year and to be evaluated annually.
  • Must attend the mandatory training sessions in late May 2024 (exact dates TBA).
  • Minimum commitment of 10 hours per week (including community hour).
  • Assist with advisement and registration year round, including winter and summer sessions.
  • Will be expected to attend staff meetings and meetings with Senior Mentor.

PAY

  • Peer Advisors are paid $15.61 per hour for a minimum of 10 hours per week.
  • Other opportunities for additional hours during peak registration periods and other college-wide events may be available throughout the academic year.
