9/11 Memorial and Museum

About us: The 9/11 Memorial & Museum is the country’s principal institution concerned with exploring 9/11, documenting its impact, and examining its continuing significance. Honoring those who were killed in the 2001 and 1993 attacks is at the heart of our mission.

Volunteer and Operations Intern (1 position)

  • Provide direct support to the Director of Volunteer and Intern Operations
  • Utilize database to keep volunteer information updated
  • Assist in planning and facilitating volunteer appreciation events

Government Affairs Intern (1 position)

  • Support in the execution of different local, state, and federal government advocacy initiatives
  • Communicate with key stakeholders, government offices and legislative staff
  • Assist with background research for legislative and budgetary priorities for the Museum

Photo Archivist Intern (1 position)

  • Update metadata for digital files within the digital asset management system
  • Write visual descriptions for photographs to improve website accessibility
  • Fulfill photo archive research requests from staff

Retail Intern (multiple positions) 

  • Engage and support museum visitors
  • Assist retail operations at museum store and carts
  • Complete back of house tasks including inventory and organization

Oral History Intern (1 position)

  • Prepare the museum’s oral history collection for public access and research
  • Conduct research, writing, and outreach
  • Transcribe oral histories and assist with recordings

Ideal Candidates: Students interested in the Photo Archivist Intern position, the Volunteer Operations Intern position, the Government Affairs Intern position, and the Oral History Intern Position must have weekday availability between 9am-5pm to complete their shifts. Students selected for retail roles can complete their shifts during the week or on the weekend. Brooklyn Justice Initiatives

About us: Operating out of Brooklyn Criminal Court on Schermerhorn Street, Brooklyn Justice Initiatives (BJI) is staffed by a team of social workers, case managers, and court liaisons. By providing meaningful early diversion, pretrial supervised release, and post-conviction sentencing options, Brooklyn Justice Initiatives seeks to use an arrest as a window of opportunity to change the direction of an individual’s life and avoid unnecessary incarceration. 

Modality: In-person, 120 Schermerhorn St, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Role: 

  • Attend and table at community events with other Community Engagement Team members (weather permitting!)
  • Conduct phone outreach to participants who have finished the program to inform them of the BJI exit survey
  • Provide support to the Housing Specialist and Education & Employment during on-site workshops
  • Add to our list of community resources and organizations by utilizing prior knowledge or conducting research to address key participant needs
  • Occasionally shadow with BJI case managers and court operations team members to learn about the process that participants go through after joining BJI programming 

Ideal Candidate: Must be comfortable working with a diverse group of clients; interest in the justice system, social work, and/or related fields preferred but not required. 

Skills developed in this role: Resource facilitation, public speaking, outreach and community engagement

Canary Impact

About us: The Canary Impact is dedicated to funding decarceration organizations & initiatives that are led and/or meaningfully informed by leaders who are or have been directly impacted by the legal system. Our primary focus is to build the capacity and leadership of people who have been impacted by the legal system by providing direct funding to them, so that they can realize their own vision for decarceration to build self and collective power.

Modality: Hybrid: Some hours may be completed remotely, some in-person hours may be required: 500 7th Avenue, 8th Floor New York, NY 10018

Commonpoint - Beacon MS 172

About us: The Beacon Programs are school-based community centers funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) that provide safe, inclusive spaces for youth, families, and community members. 

Modality: In-person at 81-14 257th Floral Park, NY 11004

Role: 

  • Supervise youth in a supportive environment
  • Assist with activities like homework help, gym, and art
  • Facilitate activities as needed

Ideal Candidate: Must be available one day per week during the Monday-Friday 2pm-6pm hours.

GallopNYC

About us: GallopNYC uses therapeutic horsemanship to help riders in NYC with disabilities walk, talk and learn, inspiring them to live their lives as fully, independently and productively as possible. We operate at three locations around the city. 

Modality: In-person in either Howard Beach or Prospect Park

Role: 

  • Support therapeutic lessons by assisting riders
  • Communicate with and lead-walk horses
  • Complete various barns tasks

Ideal candidate: Candidate must be able to complete shifts between Tuesday-Sunday, with weekends preferred. Candidates must be able to walk and jog for short intervals, and be able to lift 25 pounds. This position will involve getting dirty.

GMHC

About us: GMHC is the world's first advocacy center for people living with HIV/AIDS. GMHC supports clients with services including nutrition and meals, legal, immigration, mental health counseling, substance abuse, housing, financial management, job readiness and placement, and other social support. Volunteers will assist with our Pantry Program’s day-to-day operations to meet program requirements.

Role: 

  • Conduct nutritional assessments and reassessments
  • Conduct individual nutritional counseling sessions
  • Data entry
  • Food distribution

Ideal Candidate: Volunteers must be available to work in person during the pantry opening days (Tuesday through Thursday). Volunteers will be working with GMHC clients living with HIV/AIDS in need of nutrition support. The majority of attendees are POC and GMHC clients are majority members of the LGBTQ+ community. Volunteers must exhibit cultural sensitivity.

Hour Children

About Us: Hour Children is a leading provider of services to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women in New York State. Focused on women and their children, we support families during a mother’s incarceration and help families get back on their feet upon release. We do this by providing housing, childcare, job training, and mental health services. Hour Children Food Pantry is client choice. We prep our table and allow our families to choose what they want. Our food pantry offers fresh fruits & vegetables, whole grains & beans, meats, fish, & milk.

Modality: In-person

Role:

  • Prepare tables for incoming clients
  • Bag fresh vegetables and fruits
  • Distribute food

Queens Community Justice Center - Jamaica

About us: Queens Community Justice Center ( QCJC) provides case management , leadership training, and a range of youth development for justice-involved young people and their families in Queens, as well as young people who have not had contact with the justice system. The Queens Community Justice Center is a community based organization that believes that employment changes lives.  

Modality: In-person

Role: 

  • Assist the Job Developer in assessing the client's employment readiness level
  • Assist in identifying organizations with employment opportunities
  • Reach out to clients to remind and confirm if they are attending programming

Queens Community Justice Center - The Rockaways

About us: The Queens Community Justice Center- The Rockaway's works with people both in and outside the justice system, providing a range of supportive services and opportunities for civic engagement for people of all ages. Our goal is to Improve public safety and providing pathways out of the justice system by promoting opportunities for youth, investing in communities, and creating new ways of delivering justice. 

Modality: In-person at 1027 Beach 20th Street, Far Rockaway NY 11691

Role: 

  • Interns assigned to the community affairs pod will assist with community-based initiatives and projects aligned with community affairs goals such as helping with the Hygiene and Diaper Pantry. Support outreach and engagement efforts, including community events, and information sessions.
  • Interns assigned to the Housing Justice pod will assist with client intake processes including gathering information, completing forms, and supporting required documentation. Provide client assistance and support services, including referrals and follow-up, under staff supervision. Maintain client confidentiality.
  • Interns assigned to the Youth Pod will participate in youth development and youth work activities, including supervised programming, mentoring, and workshops.

Ideal Candidate: We would love to work with students who are from the Rockaway's or familiar with the Rockaway's community. However, we are open to all.

Sadie Nash Leadership Project

About us: Sadie Nash Leadership Project provides award-winning leadership programming to more than 500 young women and gender-expansive youth of color in New York City and Newark each year. Operating at the intersection of love and rigor, we use the tools of popular education to build critical consciousness, community, and college and career readiness. Volunteers at Sadie Nash will work collaboratively with staff members to provide programming to participants and/or will work on various administrative tasks. 

Modality: In-person

Role: 

  • Assist with college access programs
  • Assist with programming for younger high schoolers
  • Assist with communications and social media

Ideal Candidate: Sadie Nash prioritizes candidates whose identities reflect those of our participants and identify as young women, gender expansive, trans and people of color and first generation college goers.

The Bronx Health Link, Inc.

About us: The Bronx Health Link amplifies the voices of Bronx residents and community-based organizations and equips them with the tools to achieve health equity.

Role: 

  • Support administrative and clerical duties
  • Attend community events to conduct outreach
  • Answer calls and walk-ins as needed

Ideal candidate: must have availability to complete a shift between the hours of 9am-5pm, Tues-Thurs.

The United Jewish Council of the East Side (UJCES)

About us: UJCES is a non-profit organization supporting the Lower East Side and wider NYC community through human services and community development programs.

Modality: In-person

Roles: 

  • NORC Program Greeter Volunteers assist at a NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) program.
  • NORC Volunteers proactively greet visitors at a community center, provide information about programs and services, assist with sign-in and registration for programs, and answer visitor questions.
  • Food Pantry Assistance Volunteers support the team with two food pantries, both on-site and occasionally on local walking deliveries to clients.
  • Food Pantry Assistance Volunteers help organize, pack, deliver, and hand out food pantry orders.

Ideal candidate must be comfortable interacting with people of all ages and have strong organizational skills.
