New York City stands at a pivotal moment in its history. Over several decades since the 1990s, New York City witnessed significant reductions in crime and in the use of jail, prison, and community supervision. Yet, following the rise in crime during COVID and a public perception of disorder, we have heard calls for more punitive responses. The purpose of this event is to shed light on the critical choices about how to best produce safety and enhance justice.
The featured research, published by the Data Collaborative for Justice at John Jay College and the University of Maryland, lays the foundation for important discussions about public safety and community healing in New York – even as crime and safety in the City comes into sharper focus as the 2025 mayoral election approaches.
This webinar, which will be moderated by John Jay College’s Vice President of Justice Initiatives Erica Bond, will feature the report authors Dr. Stephen Koppel from John Jay’s Data Collaborative for Justice and Dr. Min Xie from the University of Maryland, joined by Stanley Richards, president and CEO of the Fortune Society.
