CUNY’s Brightspace environment restricts access to the Email tool to within courses, via the course Classlist tool.
Note: Instructors who have hidden the Classlist tool within their courses should be aware that hiding the Classlist will prevent the student from accessing messaging in Brightspace, even when academically appropriate, such as a student reaching out to their instructors. If you have removed the Classlist from the Course Navbar, access the Classlist through the Course Admin page. To reverse this, instructors must re-add the Classlist to their course NavBar or re-enable the tool (as needed).
John Jay ODL LMS Support does not recommend disabling (turning off) the Classlist tool as that will restrict the instructor’s ability to email learners and restrict other accommodation features.
Email All Learners in a Course
- In a course, select Classlist from the drop down More menu on the Course Navbar.
- On the Classlist page, select the Email Classlist button. On the Email Classlist page all learners will be listed, select Send Email. A pop-box will appear to compose your email. Press Send when Complete.
Note: All learners will appear in the Bcc field of the email. Learners will not see any other learner’s names or email addresses. Instructors will receive a copy of the email that was sent.
Email Specific Learners in Course
- On the Classlist page, to email an individual learner, select their name in blue. A pop-box will appear to compose an email message. Select Send to complete.
- To email a specific number of learners, select the box to the left of their name and select the Email icon. A pop-up box will appear to compose the message. Select Send to complete.
