Dr. Simone Martin-Howard, associate professor in the Department of Public Management, will lead a team of Master of Public Administration (MPA) students participating in the US Department of State Diplomacy Lab project, which engages US colleges and universities in policy research.
Students participating in Diplomacy Lab explore real-world challenges and contribute directly to the policymaking process. The John Jay project, Building Inclusive Community Safety Programs: Addressing Crime and Enhancing Security in Trinidad and Tobago’s Diverse Communities, will include in-depth interviews with government officials and non-state actors; policy analysis to support alternatives to gang influence, support refugee integration, promote social cohesion and improve education for children and youth; and content analysis of government and community-based programs on community-led safety, diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) principles and crime prevention. The final product will include strategies and recommendations that improve community safety, promote DEIA principles and reduce crime in Trinidad and Tobago. Martin-Howard, who also serves as director of the MPA Program, will recruit students who will receive independent study credit.
Martin-Howard’s research, which focuses on health and social equity, public administration and nonprofit service delivery and the intersection of public health and criminal justice, has been published in Public Administration Review, the Journal of Public and Nonprofit Affairs, Crime & Delinquency, the Journal of Urban Health, the Journal of Health and Human Services Administration, Women & Criminal Justice and the Journal of Public Management and Social Policy. Prior to joining John Jay, she was an assistant professor at Long Island University and a health administration leader. She has a PhD from Rutgers University-Newark, a MPA and MA from Syracuse University and a BS from St. John’s University. Martin-Howard also earned graduate certificates in Health Services Management and Policy, Conflict Resolution and Security Studies from Syracuse University. Read more about Dr. Martin-Howard.
