Professor Javier Moreno-Rivero Wins Two International Research Awards
Dr. Javier Moreno-Rivero, assistant professor of translation and intercultural studies, was awarded two major international honors: the Young Scholar Prize 2025 from the European Society for Translation Studies (EST) and a Beatriz Galindo Distinguished Researcher Fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
The EST Young Scholar Prize, awarded every three years, recognizes outstanding doctoral dissertations in translation and interpreting studies worldwide, as well as the academic trajectories of early-career scholars. Moreno-Rivero completed his Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge with a dissertation titled “Translation Policies of Minoritised Languages through Organised Activism: A Comparative Study of Catalan and Welsh.” His research draws on sociology, anthropology, political science, law and sociolinguistics to explore how public policy can either dismantle or reinforce linguistic and communicative barriers. His dissertation was selected from a highly competitive pool of international submissions defended between 2022 and 2025, marking one of the most prestigious recognitions for researchers in the field. The award was presented at the 11th EST Congress: The Changing Faces of Translation and Interpreting Studies, held at the University of Leeds in July.
In addition, Moreno-Rivero received a Beatriz Galindo Distinguished Researcher Fellowship, a highly competitive program that recognizes outstanding research careers across all academic disciplines. Funded by Spain’s Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, the fellowship supports scholars with international trajectories who seek to strengthen research excellence within Spanish universities. Moreno-Rivero is one of only four awardees worldwide in the humanities and social sciences, and he is hosted by the prestigious Universidad Complutense de Madrid while on special research leave from John Jay College.
