Learning Management System Transition
What is the Learning Management System (LMS) transition? (Updated 10/2025)
The City University of New York (CUNY) transitioned from the Blackboard Learning Management System to D2L Brightspace, with all campuses live in Brightspace starting in Summer 2025.
All John Jay courses have been held in Brightspace since Summer 2024. To conclude the learning management system transition, Blackboard will be retired at CUNY on December 18, 2025.
CUNY will continue to maintain archival copies of courses as required under university policies and by applicable law, including for courses originally offered on Blackboard. ODL LMS Support recommends faculty download from Blackboard export copies of their course content before the Blackboard retirement date for personal use and ease of access (see links to resources below). Please note: Blackboard Collaborate recordings are not included in the course archives maintained by the university and must be downloaded separately if faculty wish to retain personal copies.
John Jay College Brightspace Transition Timeline
Fall 2023 - Spring 2024
- Brightspace configured and tested pre-launch
- Administrator and Instructor training on Brightspace
- Course redesign and development by instructors
Summer 2024 – present
- All John Jay courses and campus-based organizations hosted in Brightspace
- Blackboard available for fulfillment of outstanding incompletes and course backups
Fall 2025
- Instructor download of course and organization copies from Blackboard
- Blackboard retirement – December 18, 2025
